Grant Nelson was appointed to the Supervisory Committee in 2023. Grant has a long and diverse background in education, leadership and music serving as both a classroom teacher and President of the La Mesa Spring Valley Teachers Association, participating in extensive contract negotiations, writing, enforcement, and labor law, until his retirement in 2021.

He grew up in Missoula Montana. He participated largely in Symphonic Band, Jazz, and Orchestral music performance programs. As a Junior, he was selected to participate in the McDonald’s All American Band, serving as principal chair trombonist. He performed in New York City, Chicago Symphony Hall, and the Rose Bowl. Grant then attended the University of Montana on a music scholarship, majoring in Performance and Education. He then traveled the United States and Internationally with a Las Vegas based show act!

 He earned his Bachelors in Liberal Arts, and then Master’s degree In Education from San Diego State University, Nelson was a Reading and Math Intervention Specialist in the Lakeside Union School District, and then spent the next 22 years as a Language Arts and U.S. History teacher at La Presa and Parkway Middle Schools in La Mesa.

A well-rounded individual, Nelson was also the owner of Nelson Entertainment Agency, developing, booking and producing entertainment locally, nationally, and internationally. He also coordinated with the U.S. military in concerts, club promotions, and production in the United States, Japan, Korea and Okinawa.
